Sales of industrial robots in India hit a new record of 4,771 units in 2018. This is a 39 percent increase from the previous year (3,412 vehicles in 2017). India now ranks 11th in the world in terms of annual installations.
"India is one of the strongest growing economies in emerging Asia," said Junji Tsuda, president of the International Federation of Robotics. "While recent global results have been fairly modest, India achieved an impressive 39% growth in 2018. The number of robots installed has been growing rapidly in recent years. India grew at a cagR of 20 per cent from 2013 to 2018."
A promising prospect
The prospects for further increases in robot installations are bright. With India's GDP expected to grow by more than 7% in 2019, companies in many industries are looking to expand capacity. India has a young population, so labor demand is high. The country needs to expand manufacturing to create more jobs. In India, higher wages and a rising proportion of affluent citizens are the main drivers of a growing and promising consumer market.
The car industry
The automotive industry remains by far the largest customer industry, accounting for 44 percent of total installations. But the strongest growth driver in 2018 was the general sector, which grew by 28%, including rubber and plastics, metals and electrical/electronics. The use of robots in non-automotive manufacturing is catching up with the automotive industry.

In terms of annual installed capacity, India now ranks 11th in global annual supply, up three places from the previous year and ahead of Singapore, Canada and Thailand. The operational inventory of robots rose to about 23,000 units, up 21 percent from 2017. In the automotive sector, the number of industrial robots per 10,000 workers is 99, less than a quarter of That of Indonesia (440), and far behind China (732) and Korea (2,589), which shows the potential of Automation in Korea. India's manufacturing sector has a robot density of just four industrial robots per 10,000 employees.
