5 times more energy per cell! Panasonic starts trial production of 4680 batteries this year

According to the latest reports, Panasonic Chief Financial Officer Hirokazu Umeda recently said Wednesday that they are revamping some facilities and expect to start trial production of 4680 electric car batteries at an undisclosed location in Japan at the beginning of the fiscal year starting in April.

The company then intends to conduct further trial production in Wakayama Prefecture, near Panasonic's Osaka headquarters, although the timing and location of formal mass production has not yet been determined.

Umeda mentioned, "Tesla has made an extremely strong demand for the 4680, so when we are actually able to deliver the 4680, we plan to prioritize meeting Tesla."

It is reported that Tesla officially announced the 4680 cells in September 2021, claiming 5 times more energy per cell, 16% more range, 6 times more power, and 6 times more power output compared to polar ear batteries.

This "revolutionary" electric cell has sparked a lot of buzz in the industry once it was unveiled, not only can it make the range increase by 16%, but also save 86% of the cost, which will make the new Tesla cars have a more affordable price, and we have been looking forward to the 4680 electric cell models on the market.

As previously reported, the 4680 battery is wider in diameter and higher in height than the previous 21700 battery and consists of only 950 cells with an energy density of about 300kWh/kg.

At the same time, the 4680 battery also uses laser electrodeless ear technology to remove the main heat-generating parts of the battery, reducing internal resistance and making the battery's thermal stability more controllable.
