Australia proposes a solar tax on rooftop PV

According to Australian media reports, millions of Australian households may soon be subject to an additional "solar tax" for selling solar energy to the grid as a result of controversial new rules proposed by the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC), Australia's main energy market rule maker. Millions of Australian households may soon be charged an additional "solar tax" for selling solar energy to the grid.

The AEMC said the tax would send a "price signal" to help reduce grid congestion and encourage more households to install battery storage devices and reduce the amount of electricity going online during peak hours. There are 33,000 Australian homes with battery storage installed, but the Tesla Powerwall 2 costs more than $14,000 to install and does not generate a return on investment for households.

Some solar advocacy groups are strongly opposed to any solar tax, arguing that the grid could be rewarded handsomely through existing grid electricity prices. They should make the necessary investments to accommodate the demand for distributed energy.
