The French government recently unveiled a new plan to promote the "National strategy for ARTIFICIAL intelligence", which will invest 2.2 billion euros in the next five years to accelerate the development of ARTIFICIAL intelligence, focusing on funding training and research in this frontier field.
France's "national strategy for ARTIFICIAL intelligence" was released by President Emmanuel Macron in March 2018, including attracting high-quality researchers, establishing world-class research centers and strengthening talent cultivation. According to the strategy, the government will invest 1.5 billion euros in ai development over five years from 2018 to encourage research and innovation projects, industrial projects and start-ups, including 400 million euros for research tenders and major innovation research, and 800 million euros for nanoelectronics.
The new plan, which will add 2.2 billion euros to the original investment, lists three main objectives: to improve The competitiveness of French AI, to make France a leader in embedded and trusted AI, and to accelerate the use of AI in the economy.
France is one of the earliest countries in Europe to focus on the development of ARTIFICIAL intelligence. Since 2010, France has been piloting such initiatives. The national strategy for AI focuses on the application of AI in four areas, namely healthcare, environment, transportation and national defense, and focuses on attracting talents in AI by creating better research conditions to ensure the commercial application of research achievements. Under this framework, France officially established four interdisciplinary research institutes of ARTIFICIAL intelligence in 2019.
A series of supportive measures by the French government have promoted the development of the AI industry. There are now more than 500 AI start-ups in France, up 11% from 2020, according to Digital France, a start-up organizing platform. They have raised €1.6bn and created 13,000 jobs directly, with another 10,000 expected next year.
