The global turnover of the professional service robots market reached 6.7 billion U.S. dollars (sample method), an increase of 12% over 2020. At the same time, the turnover of new consumer service robots increased by 16% to US$4.4 billion. The information comes from the 2021 World Robot-Service Robot Report submitted by the International Federation of Robotics (IFR).
The additional demand of the global pandemic has promoted the five major application trends of professional service robots:
One third of professional service robots are manufactured for cargo transportation. The turnover of autonomous mobile robots (AMR) and delivery robots increased by 11% to more than $100 million. Most of the professional service robots sold operate in the indoor environment of production and warehouses.
The demand for professional cleaning robots increased by 92% to 34,400 units. In response to the increasing hygiene requirements caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, more than 50 service robot suppliers have developed disinfection robots that spray disinfectant or use ultraviolet lamps. It is estimated that from 2021 to 2024, the sales volume of professional floor cleaning robots will increase at an average annual double-digit rate.
In terms of value, the sales of medical robots in 2020 will account for 55% of the total turnover of professional service robots. It is mainly robotic surgical equipment that has promoted this change. Turnover increased by 11% to US$3.6 billion. In terms of quantity, the number of medical applications is the largest. About 75% of medical robot suppliers are from North America and Europe.
Hotel robots are becoming more and more common, with a turnover of 249 million US dollars. The turnover of robots for food and beverage preparation almost tripled to 32 million US dollars (+196%). The Covid-19 pandemic has raised people's awareness of avoiding food. There is still huge potential for hotel robots, and the annual growth rate is expected to be in the mid-double digits.
Service robots for consumers
Robots used for housework are the largest group of consumer robots. In 2020, sales of nearly 18.5 million units (+6%), worth 4.3 billion U.S. dollars.
