India's Websol Energy plans to build 1.8GW photovoltaic cell module manufacturing plant

India's Websol Energy has approved a proposal to build a solar cell and module manufacturing plant with a capacity of up to 1.8 gigawatts.

In a filing, WNebsol said that the capacity for cells and modules produced at the new plant will use PERC and TOPCON technologies. If needed, the company will scrap existing manufacturing facilities to build new production plants. The company said it was in talks with power generators for a long-term supply of solar cells and modules.

Websol started producing 1 MW of solar cells in the mid-90s and has expanded its manufacturing portfolio with 250 MW of solar cells and 250 MW of modules. The company said it is working to produce 75 MW of solar cells and 135 MW of modules in 2021-2022.

In September last year, India's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) approved the company's Approved List of Component Manufacturers (ALMM), Websol said. At present, the Indian government has been promoting domestic manufacturing of solar cells and modules, and in April, the Ministry of Power issued a letter of intent to establish a manufacturing area for power and renewable energy equipment.
