Kosovo plans to deploy 200MWh battery energy storage system

The government of Kosovo has announced plans to deploy a battery energy storage system (BESS) with an energy storage capacity of 200MWh in response to the energy crisis.

Kosovo’s economy minister, Artane Rizvanolli, tweeted a few days ago that the country’s government has approved a plan to build battery energy storage systems and increase women’s participation in the energy sector through a $234 million grant. The grant was provided by the United States through Millennium Challenge, a foreign aid agency established in 2004.

The Kosovo government said the money would initially be used to build a new gas pipeline from Kosovo to neighboring North Macedonia, but recent gas price hikes have made the project economically unviable. Some of the money will also go to smaller renewable energy projects, the report said.

Local media quoted Rizvanolli as saying that the battery energy storage system has an installed capacity of more than 150MW and an energy storage capacity of 200MWh. This will help stabilize fluctuating grid frequencies, shift loads, and help integrate renewable energy generation assets such as solar and wind power into the grid.

Kosovo faces an energy crisis and has had to reduce its load due to low domestic power generation and high imports. About 85% of the country's electricity comes from coal-fired power generation, so some renewable energy power generation facilities have been actively deployed in recent years.
