Meet hiro, the new medical robot that disinfects surfaces and reminds polyclinic visitors to wear masks

Robstics

Singapore - Visitors to Tampini Polyclinic this month may be surprised to find a robot instead of a nurse monitoring their temperature and reminding them to put on their face masks.

The robot, called The Frontline Infection Control Medical-Assisted Robot (Hiro), was built by researchers at the Ngee Ann Institute of Technology (NP) and is currently being trialled at the polyclinic.

The robot uses UV-C light to kill bacteria and viruses and directs visitors to service points.

Hui Xipang, deputy director of NP's Robotics Research and Innovation Center, said: "The robots are designed to help reduce the possibility of infection in multi-clinic clinics, and also reduce the burden of medical staff doing arduous tasks and temperature screening in remote areas such as cleaning, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic."

Hiro is part of A partnership between NP and healthcare provider SingHealth, which operates eight of the 20 polyclinics here.

Mr Koh told The Straits Times that development of the robot began in August 2020, with plans to roll out more at various polyclinics in Singapore Health Centres next year.

It is a professional diploma in Robotics engineering for adult learners and will open to 40 applicants in April next year.

The facilities include workshops, exhibition areas and LABS, and will expose students to real-life experiences of robots, said Russell Chen, vice president of the university.

"We really want this facility to be a platform for collaboration with industry as NP evolves towards our vision of helping the healthcare, transportation, construction and sustainability industries with future technologies," he told ST at the launch.

Other projects under development include park patrol robots and the National Parks Board's (NParks) plant health monitoring robot. Last year, hougang Primary school partnered with hougang Primary School to develop CoDDiE, an instructional aid robot that helps students learn programming.

A variety of unmanned robots have emerged across the country due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
