Meta continues to reorganize its structure: the AI team is merged into the AR/VR division

Facebook's parent company, Meta Platforms, has merged its AI team into the Reality Labs division, which develops augmented Reality and virtual Reality products, according to sources. This news is also confirmed by Meta. Recently, Meta has been investing heavily in augmented reality/virtual reality to advance the development of the metasverse. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg sees the metasverse as the next stage in the evolution of the Internet.

Meta's AI team was previously at the heart of overseeing harmful content on the Facebook platform. With this change, the team will focus more on work related to virtual reality. The move could also help Meta solve the Quest VR headdisplay content issue. Following multiple media reports that Oculus users were harassed by racist attacks and other forms of inappropriate content, many felt Meta wasn't doing enough to fix the problem.

Teams focused on researching AUGMENTED reality AI will get more resources, according to a spokesperson for Meta. Meta doesn't have any products in this area yet. He also said meta has used AI in virtual reality to develop virtual people and gesture tracking technology, and is looking into how ai can be used to combat harassing content in virtual reality. "The new architecture will drive closer collaboration between technology teams, helping them develop products, platforms, and technologies that connect people together and present them in the meta-universe."

The spokesman added that the AI team will continue its current work, which includes developing automated systems to detect harmful content in apps like Facebook, including blatant misinformation and speech that encourages violence and hate. For much of this year, Facebook has been busy defending itself. The move comes after a former Employee, Frances Haugen, leaked internal company information accusing Facebook of not doing enough to ban and remove such content.

Meta's AI team has at least several hundred employees, with multiple groups focused on applying AI to specific products. The team also includes the AI Integrity team, which detects harmful content in apps like Facebook, and the machine learning system team, which studies how apps can enhance user engagement.

The organizational restructuring of the AI team follows the departure of two key figures in meta's applied AI field, They include Srinivas Narayanan, vice president of applied A.I. research, and Ragavan Srinivasan, product leader of the A.I. team. It was not immediately clear why they left, and the pair did not respond to requests for comment.

Jerome Pesenti, vice president of AI at Meta, has been in charge of the entire AI team since 2018. He currently reports to Andrew Bosworth on organizational structure. Bosworth has long run Reality Labs and will replace Mike Schroepher as the company's chief technology officer next year. As of March this year, Bosworth oversaw more than 10,000 employees in the division, accounting for one-fifth of the company's workforce. Meta also says that $10 billion is spent annually on vr and AR research and development.

Shroff is a strong proponent of A.I. technology, and he and Zuckerberg initially wanted to build an A.I. team to rival Google's. Shroff's decision to step down as the company's cTO caused unease among many in the AI team, who feared the change would hurt the team, according to sources.

In addition to the AI team, meta is also making other organizational changes. The company has seen a number of senior executives leave this year and changed its name from Facebook to Meta in October. For example, the team behind the Workplace platform, a messaging tool, was recently reorganized, and its leader, Julian Cordorniou, a Facebook vice president who had worked at the company for more than a decade, left in November. Workplace played a major role in Haugen's breach.

Meta uses Workplace internally as an office communication tool and sells it externally to other companies. Codonio's team focuses on Workplace sales and commercialization. After his departure, the Workplace team was split into two parts. Neil Delaney leads Workplace sales and Christine Trodella leads customer retention. The two had previously reported to Mr Cordonio, but now the line of reporting goes to Matthew Idema, WhatsApp's former chief operating officer. The latter is currently responsible for all of Meta's enterprise communications products.

Mr Idema, who was already in charge of WhatsApp enterprise, now manages more products, including Workplace and Messenger Enterprise. Meta is integrating its apps. Meta is also reportedly reorganizing its internal research teams to expand their responsibilities from specific apps to the entire company. The team has previously focused on studying how users interact with apps.

Recently, several meta executives announced they were leaving the company at the end of a tumultuous year, including Stan Chudnovsky, the longtime head of the Messenger app, and David Marcus, who ran the cryptocurrency initiative.
