Li Duo has a pretty face and a slight smile like a peach blossom. Such a gentle woman has a legendary life that is highly praised. She is Zhao Huichan, a prospective associate professor, special researcher and doctoral supervisor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Tsinghua University. Her research direction is more hard-core, mainly engaged in the research of soft robots, high power density driving technology of robots, flexible sensors, intelligent prostheses and exoskeletons. In this field, the talented Zhao Huichan led her team to develop and innovate.
Take orders in the face of danger, set off to win
At the beginning of 2020, an unprecedented new crown epidemic broke out in Wuhan. In the face of the sudden epidemic, the majority of medical staff regardless of their personal safety, resolutely rushed to the front line of the fight against the epidemic and continued to carry out high-intensity work. The danger is obvious to all.
In order to reduce the workload of medical staff and reduce the risk of infection, Zhao Huichan was ordered to lead the team to develop a throat swab sampling robot.
However, looking at the world, such a robot is nowhere to be found, there is nothing to participate in, and it is unprecedented. Everything can only rely on itself. Zhao Huichan leads her team day and night to research, design, and constantly improve, all the hardships and hardships only they know. Huangtian pays off. After 8 months, Zhao Huichan and her team finally successfully developed the world's first throat swab sampling robot. Although it is only a prototype, it has achieved the functions of accurate sampling, easy disinfection, and prevention of cross infection.
The advent of this robot not only means that the research and development of robots has reached a new height, but also contributes to my country's epidemic prevention.
In the same year, the "MIT Technology Review" Global Youth Technology Leaders Summit announced the world's most authoritative young technology innovation talent list - "MIT Technology Review" "35 Under 35 Technology Innovation Talents" list (ie MIT TR35), Zhao Huichan was successfully selected.
Indifferent to fame and fortune, forge ahead
Qiji thousands of miles, not a day's work! Zhao Huichan's achievements in the field of science and technology are the result of her diligence and perseverance.
During her studies at Tsinghua University from 2008 to 2012, Zhao Huichan not only studied the courses of mechanical engineering in her major, but also took courses in economics, and finally obtained a double degree in mechanical engineering and economics when she graduated.
The excellent grades made Zhao Huichan successfully win the favor of Cornell University. Under the guidance of Robert F. Shepherd, an expert tutor in the field of soft robotics, she successfully completed a 5-year master-doctoral program in mechanical engineering.
Then, under the recommendation of her mentor Robert F. Shepherd, Zhao Huichan went to Harvard University for postdoctoral research at the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Her mentor was Robert J. Wood, a well-known leader in the field of passive robotics. Under his guidance, Zhao Huichan became obsessed with micro robots.
Zhao Huichan said: "I hope that robots can go to places where we humans can't go and help us do heavy and dangerous things. This is my vision." In order to realize his vision, Zhao Huichan is advancing bravely. During his postdoctoral research, Zhao Huichan used the self-designed miniature artificial muscles for an insect-like robot with only 200 mg, the artificial bee, and it took off successfully.
After leaving the postdoctoral station in 2018, Zhao Huichan declined the invitation of Harvard University, gave up the favorable treatment overseas, and resolutely returned to China, becoming the youngest teacher of his alma mater Tsinghua University, and led the students to form a team dedicated to the scientific research of new robots. Zhao Huichan's scientific research has achieved a major innovation in flexible robot technology, and has also made China a world leader in the field of flexible robots.
Zhao Huichan's outstanding performance in the field of robotics has been widely recognized by the society. On the morning of October 14, 2021, Alibaba Dharma Academy announced the winners of the 4th Green Orange Award. 10 young scholars aged 35 and below (U35) were awarded, and Zhao Huichan was among them, receiving a bonus of 1 million yuan. Zhao Huichan has publicly stated that the prize money will be used to expand the laboratory to better enable students to conduct scientific research.
Zhao Huichan is indifferent to fame and fortune, disregarding personal gains and losses, and devotes himself to the scientific research of robots, and has won the support of the National Natural Science Foundation of China's major R&D program of inclusive robots, general projects, and key R&D programs of the Ministry of Science and Technology. She has also achieved outstanding academic performance. She has published academic papers in journals such as Nature, Science Robotics First Issue, Nature Communications, IEEE Transactions on Robotics, Advanced Functional Materials, etc. Three papers were selected as ESI highly cited papers. She was also selected into the "Forbes China Under 30 Elite List", awarded the 17th Tsinghua University "Good Teacher and Friend", Tsinghua University Outstanding Communist Party Member and other honors.
