PGE Group plans to deploy 200MW/820MWh battery energy storage system in Poland

According to foreign media reports, the Polish state-owned power company PGE Group has recently obtained regulatory approval for the deployment of a 200MW/820MWh battery energy storage system in Poland.

PGE Group said that the battery energy storage project named CHEST, with an installed capacity of 200MW and an energy storage capacity of 820MWh, will become one of the largest lithium-ion battery energy storage projects in Europe after completion.

To date, the project has received decisions on environmental conditions, concession commitments for electricity storage and grid connection permits.

The project will be integrated with the existing 716MW/3600MWh pumped-storage power generation facilities in operation in the region, aiming to solve the intermittent power generation problem of nearby wind farms. PGE Group has permission to build 3.5GW of wind power facilities near the two sites.

The company also said that the project will contribute to the competitiveness of the Polish energy market and that the Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia power systems will be synchronized with the connected continental European power systems.

Achieving this synchronization is accomplished through the Harmonylink project, which will build 300 kilometers of power lines to connect the grids of Poland and Lithuania. Although plans to deploy the project predate the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, it is aimed at weaning the Baltic states from Russia's fossil fuel dependence.

Another interesting energy storage project in Poland is the energy storage system assembly and production facility being built by battery manufacturer Northvolt, which recently received a €1.8 billion funding support.
