Tesla, the leading US electric car maker, has announced an expansion of its partnership with Panasonic, a Japanese company, to build a Y10bn solar cell and module factory in Buffalo, New York, with mass production expected to begin in 2017. This is the second manufacturing collaboration between Tesla and Panasonic, following the Gigafactory, a lithium-ion battery plant for electric vehicles in Nevada.
Tesla recently announced that it will acquire SolarCity and merge it into tesla business; With plans to upgrade and expand Tesla's energy storage system, Powerwall/Powerpack, the company's new energy integration business structure is becoming clearer. Tesla and Panasonic will deepen their cooperation in environment-related businesses through a solar cell and module plant in Buffalo, according to nikkei.
Gigafactory expects to begin mass production of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles in November 2016. Tesla moved up its production schedule from 2017 after strong third-quarter sales and strong orders for the new model.
The scale and technical direction of the solar cell and module plant to be built in Buffalo are still unknown. Tesla will combine SolarCity's business with batteries made in factories with Panasonic to reduce costs through vertical integration, Nikkei said.
Panasonic is one of the most important manufacturers of heterojunction batteries and modules in the world. Its HIT products have entered the stage of mass production and practical application. According to EnergyTrend, SolarCity had planned to build a 1GW heterogeneous cell and module production line in Buffalo, but this plan has been temporarily put on hold due to SolarCity's financial situation and organizational adjustments. Given this information, it is likely that some of tesla and Panasonic's Buffalo production lines will be used to produce heterojunction products.
