The difference between EPS power supply and UPS power supply

UPS and EPS are both an emergency protection method provided when the mains power supply cannot be continuously and stably supplied. USP power supplies are generally used in IT field equipment such as computers and servers, or precision instruments and meters, while EPS is mainly used in the field of fire protection. Although they are all used for power protection, there are essential differences in normal use. For example, EPS will have a flash-off process, while UPS can be switched directly from the mains. When a server is performing high-speed storage, if the power fails, the data will not be maintained in time, and the hard disk will be scrapped. Therefore, EPS cannot be used as UPS, and of course, UPS cannot be used as EPS.

From the literal meaning of UPS and EPS, it is actually very easy to understand. The full name of EPS is Emergency Power Supply, also known as fire emergency power supply. It follows the national standard GB17945-2010 of "Fire Emergency Lighting and Evacuation Indication System". There are no similar products in the world, so there is no corresponding to it. international standard. EPS is an indispensable emergency power supply in today's important buildings, mainly used for emergency lighting, road traffic lighting, tunnel lighting, fire elevators and so on.

The full name of UPS is (Uninterruptible Power System), which is what we usually call an uninterruptible power supply. It is mainly to prevent power failure, undervoltage, interference, inrush current and other abnormal conditions in the mains and provide a backup AC cigarette lighting for the load equipment without interruption, so as to ensure the uninterrupted operation of the equipment.

Many people think that EPS is developed from the practical application of UPS. Both adopt IGBT inverter technology and PWM technology, which can provide two-way selective output power supply. However, UPS is a single closed-loop control system with voltage feedback, while EPS is a multi-closed-loop control system composed of voltage and current feedback, so the sinusoidal waveform and accuracy of UPS output AC power are better, while the overload capacity and load adaptability of EPS output power Strong capability and high reliability. So even though sometimes UPS and EPS can achieve interoperability in terms of use, there are still big differences.

The difference between the working principle of UPS and EPS

When the mains power is normal, the EPS takes priority over the bypass at this time, the mains power is directly connected to the load from the bypass, and the battery is charged at the same time. At this time, the inverter is in a standby state.

When there is a power failure in the mains, the electric energy stored in the battery will begin to be released, invert through the inverter, and then supply power to the load. When the utility power returns to normal, the EPS control center will automatically shut down the inverter, turn the utility power bypass to supply power to the load, and charge the battery pack at the same time.

Nowadays, the UPS we use is basically an online uninterruptible power supply type. The mains and the electrical equipment are isolated through the UPS, that is, the mains does not directly supply power to the electrical equipment, but is converted into a voltage regulator by the UPS. The DC power supply is divided into two channels, one to charge the battery, and the other to return to a stable, high-quality AC power to supply power to the power supply equipment.

When the utility power is abnormal, the UPS will immediately invert the DC power in the battery into stable, high-quality AC power to supply power to the power supply equipment. The UPS supplies power through the inverter regardless of whether the mains is normal or not. Only when the inverter is faulty or overloaded will the bypass supply power.

Now both EPS and UPS use batteries to store electricity. Once the battery is broken, it means that the EPS or UPS is useless in the case of abnormal mains power, so the regular maintenance of the battery becomes particularly important. Early uninterruptible power supplies used flywheels and internal combustion engines to provide power for loads, and of course they are now used in some harsh situations, but usually batteries are used to provide power. UPS not only has online uninterrupted power type, but also backup type and online staggered type. The backup type is a bit like EPS. Normally, it is powered by the mains. Only when the mains is abnormal, it will be powered by the battery. The online staggered type will only intervene in the correction when the mains is not ideal, unlike the online UPS. Fully involved, it's always ready to boost and decompress to compensate for the circuit. It is no exaggeration to say that EPS is developed from UPS.
