Recently, overseas media reported that researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago in the United States have created the first usable lithium carbon oxide battery (hereinafter referred to as li-CO2 battery). With a theoretical energy density of 1,866Wh /kg, about seven times that of current lithium-ion batteries, the new battery could help increase the range of pure electric vehicles significantly.
In a paper published in the journal Advanced Materials, researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago say they have developed a new material that can significantly increase the energy density of li-CO2 batteries. The energy density of the latest lithium-ion battery technology is about 260Wh/kg, while the li-CO2 battery can theoretically reach 1876Wh/kg. So far, the new battery has been effectively tested for 500 cycles.
However, the development of the new battery has not been all smooth sailing, and there have been some thorny problems at first. The new battery forms carbon and lithium carbonate as it discharges, but the original prototype was only able to reverse the chemical reaction during charging, not carbon. The researchers then changed some of the battery's ingredients to include molybdenum disulfide as a catalyst for the negative electrode, which helps reactivate the carbon during the charging process.
It's a remarkable invention, but given the new battery technologies out there, lithium-sulfur batteries may be easier to popularize. Compared with Li-CO2 batteries, lithium-sulfur batteries do not need rare metals such as molybdenum as key materials, and the latter has greater technical potential as its theoretical limit of energy density can reach 2600Wh/kg.
