What is the difference between a battery cell, a battery module and a battery pack?

The general structure of lithium battery is: cell - module - battery pack.

Battery cell technology is the cornerstone of battery system. The process of assembling lithium battery cells into groups is called PACK, which can be a single battery, or a series and parallel battery module, etc.

What is the difference between a battery cell, a battery module and a battery pack?


In the field of batteries, sometimes we talk about batteries, sometimes we talk about cells, sometimes we talk about modules, sometimes we talk about battery packs.

A lot of customers are curious, what is the difference between these three?

The fact is that the battery is a general term, while the cell, module, and battery pack are different phases in the application of the battery.


In the battery pack, for the sake of safe and effective management of hundreds of single cells, the cells are not randomly placed in the power battery shell, but are placed in an orderly manner according to modules and packs.

The smallest unit is the cell, which can form a module, and several modules can form a lithium-ion battery pack.


01. Cell: cell refers to a single electrochemical cell containing positive and negative electrodes, generally not directly used.

In addition, the life of the cell is also the most critical factor. The damage of any cell will lead to the damage of the whole battery pack.


02. Module: The battery module can be understood as the intermediate product between the battery cell and PACK formed by the combination of lithium ion battery cells in series and parallel mode and the installation of single battery monitoring and management device.

The structure must support, fix and protect the electric core, which can be summarized into three major items: mechanical strength, electrical performance, thermal performance and fault handling capacity.


Battery Pack: Pack refers to the customized packaging, packaging and assembly of lithium batteries. The main procedures are divided into three parts: processing, assembly and packaging.

When several modules are controlled or managed together by the BMS and the thermal management system, the unified whole is called a lithium battery pack.


A single cell can not be used, only the combination of many cells together, coupled with the protection circuit and protection case, can be directly used.

This is called a battery module.

A battery module is made up of many cells.

It is necessary to pass strict screening and assemble the consistent cell into a modular battery module according to precise design, and add a single battery monitoring and management device.


"Battery core - module - battery pack" is the order from micro to macro. The battery core is exquisite. Only the module combined with the battery core is safe, and only the battery pack combined with the module is safe.


"Battery pack - module - cell" is the order from macro to micro, the battery pack shell is damaged, the module shell can continue to protect;

The module casing is also damaged, and the core body still has the ability to protect itself.


The manufacturing process from a simple cell to a battery pack is also quite complex, requiring multiple processes, no easier than the manufacturing process of a cell.

Many friends who have not contacted lithium battery will generally regard the battery pack produced by lithium battery manufacturers as a large battery. In fact, the lithium battery we use is actually the same as lead-acid battery, which is obtained by the parallel and/or series of a piece of single battery.
