Yandex launches robotic delivery service at The University of Arizona

Yandex and Grubhub have launched a roving car delivery service on the University of Arizona campus. Driverless robot couriers will deliver food from nearby cafes and restaurants. This is the second project Yandex has partnered with an American university. Recently, there was a roaming car delivery service at Ohio State University.

Rovers will run seven days a week and any time of day. The robot is fully autonomous, able to independently traverse the path from the cafe to the customer. The average speed of rovers is 5-8 km/h. In addition, the devices are adapted to Arizona's weather conditions -- hot and rainy.

Notably, the third-generation rover was launched for the first time from the University of Arizona campus. The new delivery robot is equipped with a more advanced lidar with a wide vertical Angle, increasing the number of beams from 16 to 64, an innovation that allows the robot to see objects in front of it better.

In addition, there is a camera with a view of more than 180 degrees. Beneath the lidar is an additional camera with a long focal length that helps the rover see traffic lights on the other side of the road.

Design has also changed. The robot body is now more rectangular and angular. As a result, the original capacity of the cargo hold was increased, and now it is 60 litres. The new rover can hold a 5-liter water bottle. In total, the robot can carry payloads weighing up to 20 kilograms.

Another innovation is the replaceable battery. Now the rovers don't waste time recharging, just replacing the batteries. It is worth noting that the robot is not turned off when the battery is changed, but is powered by a dedicated backup battery. The replacement process itself takes less than a minute.

In addition, rovers can now better adapt to different urban and weather conditions. The new suspension helps climb the high curb without any problems and drive on snow porridge in winter and off-road. It should be noted that the suspension is softer and the equipment does not attract much attention due to noise and movement along tiles and paving stones.

At present, the third-generation rovers have passed all test stages and are ready to be delivered to orders. Deliveries to Moscow, Innopolis and Arizona have already begun. Initially, the new equipment will work in tandem with the second generation of robots, but over time the entire fleet will take on a new look.
