Zume signs agreement with ABB to deploy 2,000 plastic reducing robots

Disposable plastic is one of the most serious environmental problems, and Zume is eager to save it. The company is working hard to create a sustainable, viable and economical alternative to many of the plastics we currently use.

Zume started as a company that created pizza-making robots. It had some pretty impressive pizza-making robot arms. Later, its co-founder Julia Collins left to make climate-friendly food. The entire company eventually changed its focus.

However, the company’s climate-focused culture does not seem to have left with Collins. Since the acquisition of Pivot in 2019, Zume has gained a certain reputation in the development of plant-based plastic alternatives. Now, the company is declaring war on plastic products through aggressive scaling-up actions and a new cooperation with industry giant abb. The company recently signed an agreement with ABB to provide an army of robots to help it complete its tasks, although neither Zume nor ABB is eager to disclose the financial details of the transaction.

ABB will provide robotic cells to enable Zume to produce sustainable packaging globally, helping to reduce its reliance on single-use plastics. In the next five years, ABB will integrate and install more than 1,000 Molded Fiber Manufacturing Cells (MFC) at Zume’s global customer sites, including up to 2,000 abb robots, to automatically produce Zume’s sustainable packaging, making it a single-use plastic A viable and economical alternative.
