Recently, the Neurosurgery Department of The Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University successfully implemented a precise stereotactic electroencephalogram (SEEG) electrode implantation using a neurosurgical robot in a child with drug-resistant epilepsy. The successful operation made our hospital become the second hospital in Hunan province to use neurosurgical robot clinically.
Xiang Jun, associate professor and head of the functional group of neurosurgery in the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University, introduced that the child, named Kai Kai (pseudonym), is 7 years old and suffering from epilepsy. Kai Kai's parents took him to many places to seek medical treatment and tried a variety of antiepileptic drugs. The oral antiepileptic drugs almost reached the maximum therapeutic dose, but the effect was not obvious. There were still more than ten seizures every day, which seriously affected Kai Kai's growth and mental health. Subsequently, Kai Kai's father was recommended to the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University. Detailed preoperative evaluation was conducted in the Neurosurgery Department of The Second Xiangya Hospital, and repeated discussions were conducted under the leadership of Director Yu Mengqiang. Considering that the epileptic foci were hidden and located deep in the brain, stereotactic ELECTROencephalography (SEEG) electrode implantation was finally decided, and advanced robotic neurosurgical assisted technology was adopted. The deep electrode was accurately implanted into the pre-planned potentially epileptic area, and the operation was successfully completed by Associate Professor Xiang Jun. After the operation, the deep electrode ELECTROencephalogram was monitored to accurately locate and guide the resection of the epileptic focus, and he has recovered and been discharged from hospital recently.

SEEG electrode implantation is the most advanced technology for precise localization of epileptogenic foci in the world, and it is also the most representative of the level and capability of epilepsy diagnosis and treatment in hospitals. The Neurosurgery Department of The Second Xiangya Hospital has carried out SEEG surgery for more than two years, and has completed more than 20 SEEG surgeries. In the past, more SEEG surgeries were performed using the traditional stereotactic framework. Compared with the traditional framework, the robot-assisted SEEG surgery has obvious advantages: Firstly, the precision of surgical robot is high, and the error of electrode implantation is generally within 0.5 mm. Secondly, using surgical robots, patients no longer need to have bulky metal frame positioning before surgery, and patients have higher comfort and compliance. In the end, the SEEG electrodes were implanted much faster with the aid of a surgical robot than with a conventional frame implant, greatly reducing the time required for surgery.
Epileptogenic zone to introduce the associate professor, the accurate positioning is the key to epilepsy surgery to achieve good results, a neurosurgery robot assisted surgery, to more clearly show intracranial pathology structure, further enhance the precision of the SEEG electrode implants, shorten the operation time, is the new direction of the development of the function of minimally invasive neurosurgery.
