A report on the renewable energy market released by the International Energy Agency recently pointed out that global photovoltaic power generation, wind power and other renewable energy power generation accelerated growth, new installed capacity set a new record in 2021, and is expected to grow further in 2022. As many countries step up efforts to tackle climate change and accelerate the transformation of energy structure, the competitiveness of renewable energy power generation will be further enhanced, becoming one of the most important sources of electricity in the world.
Despite the headwinds of rising costs and supply chain bottlenecks, global installed renewable energy capacity will grow by 6% in 2021, or 295GW, the report said. This growth was mainly driven by China and the EU: China added 53.13 GW of photovoltaic power generation and 46.95 GW of wind power; EU installed renewable energy capacity increased by 36 GW, an increase of nearly 30%.
The International Energy Agency predicts that in 2022, the global installed capacity of renewable energy power generation will increase by at least 8%. The analysis pointed out that the accelerated expansion of renewable energy production capacity is due to the safety advantages of renewable energy, and some economies are taking comprehensive measures to increase the proportion of renewable energy; Promote clean energy transition. For example, the European Union said in its recovery plan that it would further ease financial restrictions on renewable energy projects in member states. France previously proposed the "France 2030" plan, which will continue to increase the proportion of renewable energy, especially wind power.
According to forecasts, in 2022, the global photovoltaic power generation is expected to reach 60% of the new generation of renewable energy, followed by wind power and hydropower. Although the cost of photovoltaic and wind power installations will increase this year and next, renewable energy still has a greater advantage compared to the soaring natural gas and coal prices.
The International Energy Agency calls on more countries and regions to actively formulate policies to promote the transformation of the energy structure. Birol pointed out that providing appropriate incentives for accelerating the deployment of renewable energy projects and improving the approval efficiency of relevant departments will help all parties deal with the current energy security challenges and are also an important path to promote a green economic recovery.
