At IAA Transportation 2022, Canadian hydrogen fuel cell manufacturer Loop Energy unveiled a new 120kW fuel cell system. The company said the new product is expected to achieve fuel price parity with diesel engines.
The S1200 system builds on Loop Energy's existing technology to provide an additional 20% efficiency when generating electricity, achieving a net system efficiency of up to 60%.
When powering electric vehicles, the system can deliver up to 54 percent fuel-to-wheel efficiency thanks to the patented eFlow fuel cell architecture. Typically, the fuel-to-wheel efficiency of a normal diesel engine is only 20-25%. Specifically, Loop Energy utilizes the signature trapezoidal plates, whose bipolar plates have narrow channels that increase the velocity of the gas down the plate, providing superior fuel efficiency and power output.
For fleet managers, commercial vehicle operators and the wider hydrogen infrastructure market, this means less hydrogen fuel is used per kilometer travelled, reducing the total cost of ownership for hydrogen-electric commercial vehicles.
The S1200 is designed for medium to heavy duty commercial vehicles. Compared with the company's other fuel cell products, the power range and range are improved. As a complete fuel cell system, it simplifies and accelerates integration for vehicle OEMs as an off-the-shelf solution for heavy-duty transportation and power system applications.
