Recently, according to online news, the latest lithium-ion battery production base of CATL in Lingang, Shanghai has started production and has the ability to provide lithium iron phosphate batteries for Tesla.
The plant construction project was launched in June 2021, when it was disclosed that the battery production base CATL planned to build in Shanghai had a capacity of about 80GWh. At the end of the month, Tesla and CATL signed a new battery supply agreement for a period from January 2022 to December 2025.
In October last year, Tesla announced that the standard battery life version of all its models will be equipped with lithium iron phosphate batteries. It is reported that Tesla ordered 45GWh of lithium iron phosphate batteries from CATL for this purpose, but there is no further information on whether the delivery cycle of this batch of orders is one year or many years.
It is reported that the new battery factory in the Ningde era is accelerating the increase in production and has achieved 60% of the target production capacity. In addition, the new factory has been supplying batteries to Tesla since November last year, but it is not yet sure which type of batteries will be delivered. CATL was able to put the new factory into production so quickly, mainly because the factory is not completely new, but can be upgraded under the original conditions. In addition, the factory is only 3km away from Tesla's Shanghai Super Factory.
Therefore, Tesla is expected to become the main customer and service target of this factory, and of course, it will also accept battery orders from other brands. CATL's new production base in Shanghai will include a global innovation center, an international headquarters, a future energy research institute, and high-end manufacturing plants.
