DuPont collaborates to develop lithium-ion battery with 26% higher energy density than existing batteries

DuPont Electronics & Industrial, Steinerfilm, and Polaris Battery Labs are collaborating to produce a battery with a higher energy density than comparable batteries made from conventional materials 26%, but 80% less copper and aluminum. Increased energy density could increase the range of electric vehicles, make electric aircraft more feasible, and improve portable electronics. What's more, as electric vehicles become more commonplace, the technology could reduce the reliance on rare metals like copper and aluminum that are necessary for other components of electric vehicles. Copper use in electric vehicles is expected to increase to 4 million tonnes/year by 2040, and the technology could save millions of tonnes of copper.

Existing current collectors are made of thermally stable, high-strength DuPont Kapton polyimide film, metallized with Steiner film, so each side has 500 nanometers of metal for a total thickness of 5 microns, which is an The lightest and thinnest current collector in a lithium-ion battery, and uses only 17% of the aluminum and copper of ordinary electricity. The Polaris Battery Lab mixed such current collectors with LCO cathodes, graphite anodes and electrolytes to produce a new battery with a 26 percent higher energy density than batteries made with traditional aluminum and copper foils.

This major technological advance combines the expertise of three companies that are members of the Soteria Battery Innovation Group consortium, which promotes industry collaboration on advanced battery and safety technologies . At present, the alliance has more than 100 members, including NASA, Mercedes-Benz, Bosch, Motorola, Lenovo, DuPont, Applied Materials, etc. Alliance members use Soteria technology to develop and protect their business and enjoy the technological results. Thus, using this approach, more than 100 companies were able to combine expertise to achieve lithium-ion battery safety.

Soteria's Open Innovation Consortium and Licensing Architecture creates a hub for the research and development of new technologies and an architecture that enables them to be widely used in the battery industry. The materials used in this project will have a major impact on the electric vehicle industry and will also reduce the amount of metal needed to support the electric vehicle industry, making the entire value chain more environmentally friendly.
