Utilizing secondary batteries, Pramac partners with Jaguar to develop off-grid BESS

Jaguar has announced that its engineering team has partnered with Pramac to develop a zero-emission energy storage device powered by Jaguar-PACE batteries.


Pramac's technology, known as an off-grid battery energy storage system (ESS), uses lithium-ion batteries with Jaguar-PACE secondary batteries with a lifespan of one and a half years to provide zero-emission electricity when plugged into the mains .


To demonstrate its capabilities, the unit helps Jaguar TCS Racing play a role in the 2022 ABBFIA Formula E World Championship in the UK and Spain, running the car team's cutting-edge equipment diagnostics, analysing the car's on-track performance, and servicing Jaguar The station provides auxiliary power.


The testing and validation of the off-grid battery ESS by Jaguar TCS Racing is a good demonstration of technology transfer. Jaguar TCS Racing previously offered I-PACE customers a software over-the-air (SOTA) update that increased the actual range by 20km.


The flagship ESS system has a capacity of up to 125kWh – enough to fully charge Jaguar’s award-winning all-electric I-PACE high-performance SUV, or power the average household for a week. Charged by solar panels, the unit is a self-contained solution consisting of a battery system connected to a bidirectional converter and an associated control management system. Available as commercial leases, the units are equipped with an electric vehicle (EV) charging connection with dynamic control and are rated up to 22kW AC to allow EV charging.




Removing the battery from the vehicle prevents premature battery recycling and helps ensure a safe supply of rare materials. The state-of-the-art 90kWh lithium-ion battery in the Jaguar-PACE delivers up to 294kW and 696Nm of instantaneous torque, enabling acceleration from 0-100Km/h in 4.8 seconds. The battery's durability is high to match its outstanding performance and efficiency, and I-PACE customers benefit from an 8-year or 160,000km battery warranty, during which it must remain at least 70% healthy.


This advanced engineering makes the I-PACE battery ideal for secondary or even tertiary use with low energy consumption once battery health falls below the stringent requirements of an electric vehicle. Once the battery finally reaches its end of life, 95% of its materials are recyclable.


In addition to working with industry leaders such as Pramac, Jaguar TCS Racing is also committed to a future addition to FormulaE's Gen3 team. The team will further help Jaguar Land Rover develop new sustainable technologies, work with partners to set new quality benchmarks and support Jaguar's revival of its all-electric luxury brand from 2025.
