Correct maintenance rules for lithium ion batteries

For the maintenance of mobile phones, laptops and other batteries, there has been no clear guidance, we all know little about the maintenance of lithium ion batteries, there are many misunderstandings in the use. In a recent article, Isidor Bookman, CEO of Cadex Electronics, said, "The ideal battery is to charge it to 80%, disconnect it, let it drop to 40%, and then recharge it."

The theoretical basis of this statement is related to the working characteristics of lithium polymer batteries. The key to storing electricity in these batteries is to send a voltage through the lithium ions in them. The larger the charge, the greater the voltage and pressure required to carry a single lithium ion. Long-term overloading can greatly reduce the battery life cycle. According to statistics, the same type of battery with a full charge and discharge (100%) will only last 300-500 healthy cycles. If the discharge starts at 70%, the number of healthy cycles jumps to 1200-200.

The dangers of being plugged in for too long don't stop there. Batteries have a natural aging process, and high temperatures accelerate this process. The excessive temperature caused by intermittent charging can cause bubbles to form inside the battery, which can have a fatal effect on the battery's health. Therefore, we should not only pay attention to the timely charging and discharging, but also pay attention to the working environment of the notebook and get timely heat dissipation.

There is currently no software on Windows or Mac that can control the charge and discharge of a battery, but if you have a ThinkPad, congratulations. ThinkPad offers a battery management program that controls where the battery is charged and discharged, and stops charging when it reaches 80%. As shown in the picture, start charging when the battery is less than 40% and stop charging when it reaches 80%. If your current battery is in between, the system will not charge the battery.

As long as it is lithium ion, it is suitable for this maintenance method, so smart phones are the same, with the charge of the battery, than you charge to 100% every time, and then use 20% of the use habit of longer service life.

Capitaland is an expert in battery research, and their advice should be professional, but lithium-ion battery technology is changing all the time, and maybe over time there will be new maintenance measures.
