Electricity prices in Switzerland to rise by 27% in 2023

According to a forecast by the Swiss Federal Electricity Commission (Elcom), electricity prices in Switzerland will rise by an average of 27% next year.

In Switzerland, the annual electricity consumption of an average household is about 4,500 kWh. In 2023, the average price per kilowatt-hour in Switzerland will be 27 centimes, up 5.8 centimes from this year, according to the Electricity Council. Calculated on a one-year basis, the corresponding electricity bill for an ordinary household in 2023 is CHF 1,215, which is CHF 261 more than this year. In addition, electricity tariffs can vary widely from region to region, depending on how the local electricity supplier obtains electricity, whether it is stable over the long term, must be purchased in the market, or generated by itself. Depending on the energy provider, electricity prices in some regions will even triple, and the electricity bill for the average household (4,500 kWh per year) will increase from CHF 780 to CHF 2,230.

In addition, businesses will also pay more for electricity in 2023. Most Swiss SMEs use domestic electricity, so their electricity costs will also rise by 27%.
