Explain the difference between lithium ion battery and polymer lithium battery

Lithium-ion batteries are secondary (rechargeable) batteries that rely on lithium ions moving between positive and negative electrodes. During the charging and discharging process, Li+ is embedded and de-embedded back and forth between the two electrodes: When charging, Li+ is de-embedded from the positive electrode, and embedded into the negative electrode through the electrolyte, which is in a lithium-rich state; The opposite is true when discharging.

Lithium polymer battery, also known as polymer lithium battery, is a kind of chemical battery. Compared with the previous battery, it has the characteristics of high energy, miniaturization and lightweight. Lithium polymer batteries have the characteristics of ultra-thin, which can be made into different shapes and capacities to meet the needs of some products. The minimum thickness can be up to 0.5mm in theory.

The difference between lithium ion battery and polymer lithium battery:

First, raw materials are different

The raw material of lithium ion battery is electrolyte (liquid or colloid); The raw materials of lithium polymer batteries are electrolytes, including polymer electrolytes (solid or colloidal) and organic electrolytes.

Two, security is different

Lithium ion battery is easy to explode in high temperature and high pressure environment. Lithium-polymer batteries have an aluminum-plastic shell, and when they are filled with an organic electrolyte, they do not explode even when the liquid is very hot.

Three, different shape

Polymer batteries can be thin, arbitrary in area and shape, because their electrolytes can be solid or colloidal rather than liquid, whereas lithium batteries use electrolytes, which need a strong casing as a secondary packaging to hold the electrolyte.

Four, the core voltage is different

Due to the polymer battery using polymer material, can be made into a multi-layer combination in the cell to achieve high voltage, and the nominal capacity of lithium battery cell is 3.6V, in order to achieve high voltage in practical use, it is necessary to form an ideal high voltage working platform by connecting multiple cells in series.

Five, the manufacturing process is different

The thinner the polymer battery is, the better the lithium battery is, the thicker the lithium battery is, which makes the application of lithium battery can be expanded to more fields.

Six, capacity,

The capacity of polymer batteries has not increased significantly and has decreased compared with standard lithium-ion batteries.

The anode and cathode materials used in lithium ion polymer battery are the same as liquid lithium ion. The cathode materials are divided into lithium cobalt acid, lithium manganese acid, ternary material and lithium iron phosphate material, and the negative electrode is graphite. The working principle of the battery is basically the same. The main difference is in electrolytes. Liquid lithium-ion batteries use liquid electrolytes, while polymer lithium-ion batteries are replaced by solid polymer electrolytes, which can be either "dry" or "colloidal". Currently, most use polymer gel electrolytes.
