Global third-party logistics company FM Logistic uses automation to speed up warehouse operations. The company recently made a joint investment with its client IKEA, deploying Mobile Industrial Robots' MiR500 autonomous mobile robots to improve logistics processes in a warehouse in Jarosty, Poland. The MiR500 robot is a flexible and innovative technology that can be freely configured and used in daily warehouse operations.
The MiR500 robot will work closely with warehouse staff to transport pallets and other loads weighing up to 500 kilograms. The main idea is to free employees from unproductive activities, improve job safety and optimize warehouse costs.
Alexander Damie, Innovation and Process Manager at FM Logistic Central Europe, explains: To help companies and customers build a competitive advantage, we invest in innovative solutions that are not only flexible and easy to use but also cost-effective. The cost of Mobile Industrial Robots technology is much lower than competing AGV forklift solutions. In this particular case, the MiR solution was more than twice as cheap as the AGV.
The MiR500 robot can easily avoid obstacles, is not only responsive but also requires no time-consuming configuration, making it very easy to operate. Using a robot-created area map and integrated advanced software, the autonomous mobile robot is able to dynamically navigate and choose the most convenient route before departure, all without human assistance.
The robot will work independently at the IKEA distribution center in Jarosty, Poland. Warehouse employees and those responsible for managing the robot are currently being trained, and within a few weeks, the MiR500 will begin working fully independently around the clock.
Edyta Śmiechowicz, Director of Jarosty Platforms at FM Logistic Central Europe, said: "This deployment task for our client required the transport of a large number of empty wooden pallets, as these pallets were to be used in an automated warehouse. This process is ideal for automated shipping. The deployment of the distribution center includes the integration of autonomous mobile robots that transport empty pallets into the internal cargo transport process. During testing, the robot traveled more than 60 kilometers, successfully completed 180 missions, and transported more than 1,500 empty pallets. Thanks to this, we are able to optimize internal transport while fully ensuring the safety of our employees and guaranteeing the profitability of this investment.

This is an example of the two companies working together and learning jointly to improve warehouse processes and adapt to the new reality of combining manual and automated processes.
This is another deployment of this type of robot at FM Logistic, done by us together with ASTOR and ABZ Automatyka. Last year, a small MiR200 robot started operating at the logistics platform in Mshchonow, supporting joint packaging operations. The robot is used to transport production waste such as foil and cardboard to the sorting plant. On average, one such robot travels about 18.5 kilometers per day. These transportation jobs previously had to be done by employees.
FM Logistic is considering further deployment of autonomous robots at other logistics facilities.
