According to the report issued by the International Energy Agency (IEA), Greece's solar photovoltaic power generation accounts for the second place in the world. In the list of countries with the highest photovoltaic penetration rate, Spain leads with 19.1%, followed by Greece with 17.5% and Chile with 17%, while the Netherlands and Australia also exceed 15%. At the end of 2022, the average photovoltaic penetration rate in the European Union was 8.7%, while the international average was 6.2%.
As shown by data from Greek distribution network operator (HEDNO) in 2022, investment in power generation and transmission and distribution networks has led to a continuous increase in the penetration rate of green energy in Greece's energy structure. The total amount of electricity from renewable energy in the grid operated by HEDNO has doubled compared to 2019.
