Yesterday, Medtronic announced that Hugo RAS, a robot-assisted surgical system, has received marketing approval from Health Canada for urology and gynecological laparoscopic surgery.
The Hugo RAS system is a modular, multi-quadrant platform for urology and gynecologic laparoscopic Surgery that combines wrist instrumentation, 3D visualization, and Touch Surgery Enterprise's cloud-based surgical video capture options. It is supported by a team dedicated to robot project optimization, service and training.
Health Canada's approval is another important milestone in the globalization of Hugo'S RAS system. This follows the Hugo RAS system's European CE certification in early October and the completion of the first patient registrations in urology and gynecology cases in Latin America and India.
"Minimally invasive techniques have a role to play in addressing Canada's surgical backlog. It helps us optimize our valuable healthcare workforce when patients spend less time in and out of the hospital, "said Neil Fraser, President, Medtronic Canada. "Only 1-2% of surgeries in Canada are robot-assisted right now... Our first step is to work with our hospital partners to determine the best target for Hugo RAS, based on patient outcomes and costs."

Medtronic Touch Surgery Enterprise
In the United States, Medtronic has not disclosed when it will seek FDA approval in the United States. During its SECOND quarter earnings call on Nov. 23, Geoff Martha, chairman and CEO, said Hugo RAS is expected to begin trials of its IDE (Investigational Device Exemption) in the U.S. soon.

Just two days earlier, On Feb. 10, Intuitive Surgical announced the completion of its acquisition of Orpheus Medical to deepen and expand its integrated information platform. Orpheus Medical provides hospitals with IT connectivity, as well as processing and archiving of surgical videos.
It can be said that medtronic's acquisition of Digital Surgery at that time was a technical reserve for the Digital trend of Surgery and a challenge to the future (i.e. the present) head-on competition with Intuitive Surgery in soft tissue Surgery robots.
