SONY has developed a robot that can pick up unknown objects with just the right amount of force. The robot uses sensors to determine the weight and smoothness of the surface it touches to control its grip instantly.Soft objects such as flowers and cakes can also be picked up without changing shape. The robot is also intended to replace human hands and be used in nursing and disability support.
SONY has developed a robot that can grab flowers without damaging them
Currently, robots that can pick up objects are not uncommon and are already being used in factories and logistics facilities. However, most of these robots need to learn the shape of objects and the place to pick up objects in advance through camera recognition. SONY says the robot doesn't need to learn what object to grab in advance, but can handle it in the same way a human can, confirming touch and controlling force.
The robot's hands grasp from both sides, with 16 soft hemispherical protrusions on each side, the equivalent of a human fingertip, and sensors that measure pressure distribution. When grasping objects, control the grasping force to the minimum necessary. Can grasp individual shapes and sizes of objects and soft, fragile objects.
In addition to being suitable for a fixed environment, the robot can also handle complex situations with multiple objects, and could be used to carry things in the care field and display food on the shelves, the company said.
