Humans and robots go to school together

The push for automation is changing the way people and machines work together. The number of industrial robots installed in factories around the world reached about 3 million in 2020, more than doubling in a decade. The International Federation of Robotics has looked at how robot training can shape current and future workforce education and improve employee skill development.

Milton Guerry, president of the International Federation of Robotics, said: "Automating boring, dirty and dangerous jobs is improving the working conditions of factory workers." "Academies run by robot manufacturers have played a key role in making this transition happen. Employers send thousands of workers to be trained in robotics every year."

Robot makers push education

Robot manufacturers such as ABB, FANUC and KUKA enroll 10,000 to 30,000 participants annually in robotics courses in more than 30 countries. Training programs include basic programming for first-time users, as well as complex workshops. "The automotive industry has traditionally played a leading role in improving workers' skills in using robotics," said Gerhard Muller, KUKA's vice president of global customer services. "For example, Volkswagen decided to open the Kuka Institute directly at its headquarters plant in Wolfsburg, Germany.

"The training programs set up by international robot manufacturers provide key skills for the industrial workplace of the future," said Alexander Bongart, director of FANUC's German Institute. "What students learn at their headquarters school near Mount Fuji in Japan is also what they learn at training schools set up in the US, Europe or China.

As more industries move closer to automation than ever before, robotics training is also becoming part of public education in the United States, Europe and Asia. "In China, for example, ABB robotics has worked with vocational schools going back 12 years," said Arno Strotgen, who works in ABB's robotics and discrete automation business. "Today, 700 vocational schools are part of the program. We use industrial robots for training and provide 1,000 new robots a year, only for China.
