In 2029, the retired power lithium battery of electric vehicles can produce 100GWh energy storage equipment every year

According to foreign media reports, Dr. NaJiao, a technical analyst at IDTechEx, a market research company, pointed out that after the retirement of electric vehicle power lithium-ion batteries, their potential for secondary use is huge. In the future, second-hand batteries can be commonly used in static and mobile energy storage devices.

The battery is the most expensive part of an electric car. When the battery is retired, its battery capacity retention rate is still as high as 70%-80% of the initial value. However, the recycling cost of decommissioned batteries will also consume a lot of energy and even environmental pollution.

Nowadays, more and more companies are positioning second-hand batteries, hoping to recycle them and use them for static energy storage equipment. Nissan, Renault, BMW and BYD have all invested in a number of projects and commercial initiatives aimed at giving this type of battery a second life.

IDTechEx made predictions in its published report, talking about the number of second-hand batteries in the next ten years, comprehensively analyzing their potential uses, current industry (recycling of second-hand power lithium-ion batteries) implementation, management regulations, core technologies, Business model and value chain.

It is estimated that by 2029, second-hand electric vehicle batteries can be used to make 100GWh of energy storage equipment every year. Such second-hand batteries are not much different from new batteries, but the degree of attenuation of battery capacity is different.

For this reason, the key to the future is to use the "applicable" battery in the "right" application. In the future, second-hand batteries can be commonly used in static and mobile energy storage devices.

In addition, the Chinese government is formulating relevant regulations for four-wheel low-speed vehicles. It is estimated that by 2020, the sales volume of second-hand batteries will reach 3 million. Second-hand batteries may become an alternative power system for short-distance, low-speed vehicles, aiming to replace the lead-acid batteries currently used.
