Global electric vehicle battery consumption was 45.7GWh in August, according to data released by South Korean market Research firm SNE Research on Oct. 6.
While major markets such as China and the United States are growing, battery usage in China has increased more than 2.3 times year-on-year, leading the global electric vehicle market, the data showed. The electric vehicle battery market has seen steady growth for 26 months in a row and is gaining market share, led by Chinese companies, despite weakening consumer confidence amid the coronavirus crisis.
From January to August, the total usage of EV batteries registered globally was 287.6GWH, up 78.7 percent year-on-year. The electric vehicle market continued to grow from the third quarter of 2020.
Specifically, in the global ranking of battery usage for electric vehicles (BEV, PHEV, and HEV) sold from January to August, Ningde Time continued to hold the top spot. LG Energy Solutions remained in second place, while SK On and Samsung SDI showed high double-digit growth rates, ranking fifth and sixth respectively.
On the other hand, the growth rate of most Japanese companies, including Panasonic, is below the market average and continues to decline. From January to August, Panasonic's global battery loading volume reached 24GWh, up 5.3% year on year, accounting for 8.3% of the market.
The three Korean companies ranked second, fifth and sixth in global power battery usage in the first eight months of this year, with their market share dropping 8.5 percent year-on-year from 33.5 percent to 25.0 percent. LG Energy Solutions retained second place with 39.4GWh, up 10 percent year on year. Sk-on doubled to 18.4GWh, and Samsung SDI increased 59.7 percent to 14.2GWh.
SNE said the growth of the three South Korean companies was mainly driven by sales of models equipped with batteries from their respective companies. Sk-on maintained steady sales of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6, while Samsung SDI was mainly driven by sales growth of the Audi E-tron, BMW iX and I4. LG Energy Solutions maintained double-digit growth, supported by strong sales of the Volkswagen ID.4 and Ford Mustang Mach-E, as well as increased sales of the Tesla Model Y.
