Italy's energy storage installations approach 1GWh

According to the data, by the end of March 2022, Italy had installed 95,869 energy storage systems connected to renewable energy power plants. The total power of the energy storage system is 572MW, and the maximum energy storage capacity is 977MWh. Among them, 94,144 systems are lithium-ion batteries with an energy storage scale of 520MW/961MWh, and the rest are lead-acid batteries and other technologies. In terms of regional distribution, most of the energy storage systems are deployed in the Lombardy region, with a total capacity of 112MW/213MWh. The local government is implementing a multi-year tax rebate scheme for residential and commercial side energy storage systems and photovoltaics.

In contrast, the cumulative installed capacity of distributed energy storage was 734.4MWh at the end of December 2021 and 189.5MW/295.6MWh at the end of 2020.

In addition, in the first quarter of this year, Italy added 123MW/264MWh of new energy storage capacity, which is the strongest three-month period for energy storage deployment in the country so far.

The goal of Italy's National Climate and Energy Comprehensive Plan is to achieve 50GW of installed solar power by 2030.
