People's Daily Online Tokyo, September 27 -- The golden autumn season, chestnut farms across Japan ushered in the harvest season. Some tourist chestnut gardens have begun to welcome visitors to pick chestnuts, while others have adopted more novel and advanced methods to harvest ripe chestnuts.
A robot equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) technology was used to collect chestnuts at the "Danbo Farm" in Kyodanbo, Kyodo Province, Japan, on September 26, Japanese media reported.
The robot was developed by a company in Saitama prefecture. They attached a camera arm and wheels to the aluminum frame of the robot. When the start button was pressed, the AI would automatically recognize the chestnut and use the arm to grab it and place it in a basket. When the system judges that there are no chestnuts nearby, it moves to another area. Dumbo Farm plans to make it practical in the near future.
