It has been nearly two years since the COVID-19 virus was discovered. As one of the earliest countries to adopt a thorough anti-epidemic policy, China has significantly improved its efficiency and speed in controlling community infection through nucleic acid testing and other means, from the initial crowd tactics to the current high-tech power.
My first interview was at a medical center in Shenzhen. I went here because I heard that a robot that can take the place of human nucleic acid testing is being developed here. Since the beginning of this year, when confirmed cases have been found in many Chinese cities, strict screening has been carried out through "national nucleic acid testing". For example, in July this year, the city of Nanjing, where I live, completed nucleic acid tests for all residents of the community where the infection was found within 24 hours. Within three days, nearly 9.3 million citizens were tested. The ability to carry out large-scale nucleic acid tests in such a short time mainly lies in the availability of sufficient manpower to mobilize in emergency situations. To reduce the burden on medical workers, testing by tireless robots could free up medical human resources for use in other areas. Developers believe the technology could be applied to other diseases and remote treatments even after the epidemic subsides.
In addition to the medical center for research and testing robots, another place I visited in Shenzhen was the Luohu People's Hospital. In China, samples are usually sent from hospitals to laboratories, which report the results to hospitals. The key to efficient mass testing is how to shorten the time it takes to get samples to the testing station. To combat the problem, the hospital is introducing a large drone. In the past, nucleic acid test samples took 30 to 40 minutes to transport by car, but it often took more than an hour in traffic jams. Now you can use drones, and it only takes 16 minutes. It can transport 6,000 to 8,000 samples 10 to 15 times a day.
China is responding to the COVID-19 pandemic by using its evolving technology and vast information network. Of course, to make full use of these technologies, the efforts of every medical worker and the cooperation of the general public are indispensable. The success or failure of the future COVID-19 response will be determined by how we leverage our technological and human resources to give full play to each other's strengths.
