Li-ion battery charging method Li-ion battery charging process

Lithium batteries are now widely used in cell phones and other products, but there are several misconceptions about its charging method, especially the "first three charges to more than 12 hours" is a household name, but this spread is not correct?

  Li-ion battery charging method

A lithium battery charging method - how to charge the new battery

On the charging method of the new battery, the most popular is "the first three times to charge more than 12 hours to activate the battery", but this statement is correct? Or is it wrong? ~~ The answer is wrong ~~

Reason 1: This statement is a continuation of the nickel battery, but the charge and discharge characteristics of lithium batteries and nickel batteries are very different, for lithium batteries, over discharge and overcharge will bring serious damage to the battery, so it is best to charge according to the standard time and standard method, remember not to charge more than 12 hours.

Reason 2: Lithium battery will automatically stop charging after a full charge, but it has been placed on the charger, perhaps presenting a discharge-charge cycle, the characteristics of the battery's charge-discharge protection circuit may change, and the battery is at the edge of risk.

Second, the lithium battery charging method - - how to charge in normal use

On the normal use of lithium batteries should be how to charge this issue, there are many different opinions, some partners said "to use the automatic shutdown, a little electricity is not left before charging", but some partners said "with the charge", on this issue, I have been using Action in the practice of the first statement, but found that there is no need to do so, in the end, why is it? Let's look at it together ~ ~

Reason one: the life span of lithium batteries is generally 300 to 500 charging cycles, assuming that a complete discharge of electricity provided by 1Q, without taking into account the power of each charging cycle will be reduced in the future, the lithium battery can provide a total of 300Q to 500Q of power. If each time with 1/2 on the charge, it can be charged 600-1000 times; if each time with 1/3 on the charge point, it can be charged 900-1500 times; if random charging, the number of times is variable. In summary, a total of 300Q-500Q can be replenished into the power is stable. Therefore, the life of lithium batteries and the total charge power of the battery, but has nothing to do with the number of charges, deep discharge deep charge or shallow discharge shallow charge on the life of lithium batteries does not have much impact.

Reason 2: In fact, shallow discharge shallow charge is more beneficial to lithium battery, as long as the power module of the product is calibrated for lithium battery, it is necessary to deep discharge deep charge. Therefore, in the daily use process, can not be bound to use photoelectric re-charge, can be used with the charge, in order to facilitate the first.

Three, lithium battery charging method - - precautions

Caution 1: Prevent the temperature from being too high when charging

If the charging temperature is higher than the specified operating temperature (35 ℃), the power of the lithium battery will be constantly reduced, that is, the power supply moment under full charge is shortened, which will cause damage to the battery quality and reduce the battery life.

Note 2: Prevent the charging temperature is too low

If the charging is in a low temperature environment (below 4 ℃), the battery power will also be reduced, and even present charging can not be charged, but the situation is different from the high temperature environment, and is not permanently damaged, when the temperature rises to a suitable, the battery power will be restored to the previous condition.

  Caution three: often use

Frequent use will make the lithium battery electrons are always in active condition, which is conducive to the extension of its life. If not often used, remember to finish a charging cycle for the lithium battery once a month, that is, a deep discharge deep charge.

  Li-ion battery charging process

The most suitable charging process for Li-ion batteries can be divided into four stages: trickle charging, constant current charging, constant voltage charging, and charging stop. Refer to Figure 1.

Li-ion battery charging method Li-ion battery charging process

Stage 1: Trickle charge - Trickle charge is used to first pre-charge (recovery charge) a completely discharged battery cell. When the battery voltage is below about 3V, a steady current of 0.1C maximum is first selected to charge the battery.

Stage 2: Constant-current charging - When the battery voltage rises above the trickle charge threshold, the charging current is increased for constant-current charging. The current for constant current charging is between 0.2C and 1.0C. The current during constant current charging does not need to be very precise; a quasi-steady current is also possible. In linear charger designs, the current often rises with the battery voltage to minimize heat dissipation problems on the transfer transistor.

Charging at a constant current greater than 1C does not shorten the overall charge cycle time, so this practice is not desirable. When charging at higher currents, the battery voltage rises more rapidly due to overvoltage of the electrode response and the rise in voltage across the internal impedance of the battery. The constant current charging phase becomes shorter, but the total charge cycle time is not shortened because the following constant voltage charging phase is increased accordingly.

Phase 3: Constant Voltage Charging - When the battery voltage rises to 4.2V, the constant current charging is completed and the constant voltage charging phase begins. To achieve the best performance, the voltage regulation tolerance should be better than +1%.

Stage 4: Charging Stop - Unlike nickel batteries, it is not recommended to trickle charge Li-ion batteries in succession. Continuous trickle charging can cause lithium metal to exhibit a plate plating effect. This can make the battery unstable and may lead to a sudden, automatic and rapid breakdown.

There are two typical approaches to charge stopping: the use of minimum charge current discrimination or the use of a timer (or perhaps a combination of both). The minimum current approach monitors the charging current during the constant voltage charging phase and stops charging when the charging current decreases to the 0.02C to 0.07C range. The second method is timed from the beginning of the constant voltage charging phase and stops the charging process after two hours of continuous charging.

The above four-stage charging method takes about 2.5 to 3 hours to complete the charging of a completely discharged battery. High-end chargers also use additional safety measures. For example, if the battery temperature exceeds a specified window (usually 0°C to 45°C), then charging will be suspended.
