Lithium iron phosphate batteries vs. nickel-cobalt batteries, who is the final winner?

As long as the new energy cars have a certain understanding of the current people know that the biggest barrier to the development of electric vehicle skills, lies in the battery skills are difficult to break. Because of the high cost of manufacturing batteries, most of the range of electric vehicles can not make great progress in the limited cost, making its scale of use is greatly limited, compared to the traditional fuel cars competitiveness is also greatly reduced, governments have to spend a lot of effort to subsidize new energy vehicles.

So the importance of the battery on the new energy vehicle is almost equal to the importance of the engine and transmission on the traditional fuel car.

A, new energy vehicle battery classification

A class is the energy storage battery, we often say that the lithium battery belongs to this class. A class is the fuel cell, Toyota mirai is the use of this class. Energy storage batteries are divided into many kinds, used in cars with lithium batteries, lead-acid batteries, sodium-sulfur batteries and so on.

Lithium battery is the most widely used, which is divided into lithium batteries, lithium iron phosphate, lithium titanate and so on, lithium batteries because of its relatively high energy density and widely used in passenger cars, on behalf of foreign manufacturers Panasonic, LG, domestic Ningde era, BYD; lithium iron phosphate because of its outstanding safety, generally used in passenger cars, on behalf of manufacturers BYD.

Lead-acid batteries in cars are now not used as power batteries.

Second, lithium iron phosphate batteries are sought after

Lithium iron phosphate battery cost competitiveness, safety and low sensitivity to commodity price dynamics make it increasingly popular in China's electric car market.

BYD, China's largest new energy car manufacturer, said that one of its new SUVs in the middle of this year will use the latest cobalt-free battery. The company said in a statement that its latest SUV, BYD Han, will use lithium iron phosphate batteries, which can travel more than 600 kilometers per charge, comparable to the driving range of nickel-cobalt batteries.

"This is simply because lithium iron phosphate batteries can provide the best mall value," said Plateau, vice president of China's battery cathode material producer Beida Advance Technology Industry Co. via WeChat. "In addition, the cost competitiveness is much better."

Lithium iron phosphate batteries are reportedly 20 percent cheaper than nickel batteries. Lithium iron phosphate battery chemical mixture is cheaper because its synthesis is simple and the cost of the materials used is low. Other batteries that use materials such as nickel, manganese, aluminum and cobalt are more complex, and the use of these metals fluctuate in price.

The resurgence of lithium iron phosphate batteries in the top electric car market also shows that battery skills and customer concerns are far from being addressed as governments and global car manufacturers struggle to move forward on the road to global car electrification.

The nickel-cobalt battery is loved by the market because of its long range on a single charge, thus dealing with the "distance anxiety" problem that customers will stay away from electric cars. For example, Ningde era and BYD and other development of new battery pack planning can add the use of lithium iron phosphate electric car range, thus improving the competitiveness of lithium iron phosphate batteries and nickel cobalt batteries.

Plateau of BYU Advance Technology said, "For people in big cities like Beijing and Shanghai, a range of 150 kilometers is enough."

Third, the nickel-cobalt battery is the ultimate winner

Nevertheless, people rekindle the use of lithium iron phosphate battery hobby may not be durable. According to Morgan Stanley, the medium-term demand for lithium iron phosphate batteries will rise, but as nickel-cobalt batteries become more advanced, lithium iron phosphate batteries will eventually be replaced, it is estimated that the cost of nickel-cobalt batteries will fall by 20% in the next three years.

According to Reuters earlier this month, in order to reduce costs, Tesla is deepening negotiations with Ningde Era on the supply of lithium iron phosphate batteries. Tesla declined to comment, and a spokeswoman for Ningde said: "We can provide customers with a suitable and competitive solution."

Takahara said, "Since last fall, we have seen a mall-driven rebound in the hobby of lithium iron phosphate batteries."

Predictably, whether it is a single cell or a battery pack, energy density is increasing, and battery costs are rapidly decreasing. Thus, the future of the new electric car range will continue to add, the price will also continue to decline until the fuel car constitutes a strong, real pressure to stop.
