Scientists at Heriot-Watt University's National Robot Museum have built a model of a cleaning robot with a 180-degree field of view, which has both a static camera and a stereo vision camera. The robot also has four wheels and a reversible brush for cleaning hard-to-reach areas between the cabin seats and below. Scientists plan to build and market the train-cleaning robot based on the model in the first half of 2022.

The researchers spent two years collating 58,300 images of railroad and carriage litter to help robots identify objects more accurately. Now, the team is designing and developing an easy-to-use, accurate navigation system that can be used to guide the robot. It is also working on a waste detection algorithm.
