Powin Energy signs 800MWh battery energy storage system supply agreement

Borrego, a large-scale solar and energy storage project developer in the United States, said a few days ago that it has selected Powin Energy as its battery energy storage system supplier, and the two sides signed an 800MWh battery energy storage system supply agreement.

This comes after Oregon-based manufacturer and systems integrator Powin Energy announced in February that it had signed some framework agreements with four other developers to supply 5.8GWh of battery storage systems between 2022 and 2024.

Powin Energy's Centipede battery storage system allows customers to combine multiple Stack 750E storage units.

Powin Energy's Stack750E battery energy storage stack product will be used in Borrego's battery energy storage project. The Stack 750E is the company's modular energy storage solution for the company's Centipede hardware platform -- a way of combining multiple battery storage units.

When it launched the platform last November, Powin Energy claimed that up to 200MWh of battery energy storage could be deployed in an acre of space using the Centipede hardware platform, while the Stack750E energy storage unit is suitable for a duration of two hours to four hours. hours of energy storage applications.

Borrego will use the Stack750E storage units in U.S. utility-scale battery storage projects, including standalone battery storage projects or solar-plus-storage projects.JISPHUJ(J3~4%0NDHLK(T63

The company also has 490MWh of utility-scale and commercial-industrial (C&I) battery storage systems in design, construction or in operation since 2016.

Powin Energy cited its large, long-term supply agreements with Chinese battery makers CATL and EVE Energy as a testament to the robustness of its supply chain.

The company also recently said that the Centipede hardware platform will be produced at OEM Celestica's facility in Mexico, bringing the battery storage integrator's assembly and testing closer to some of its major North American demand centers.

Streamlined strategy for Powin Energy and competitors

Powin Energy was ranked fifth in a survey by analyst firm HIS Markit of global energy storage system integrators completing and planning projects in 2021.

In a recent interview with industry media, Oliver Forsyth, an analyst at HIS Markit, said the launch of the Centipede hardware platform shows that Powin Energy, like many competitors in the industry, is launching a hardware platform that simplifies the project design and installation process, and through its Modularity and standardization reduce costs.

Forsyth pointed out. These include Fluence, which launched the Fluence Cube, Gridsolv Quantum, which is owned by Wärtsilä, and now Centipede, which is owned by Powin Energy.

"We're seeing these streamlined solutions that really try to optimize space, manage the balance of equipment required for each battery module, minimize container shipping, minimize battery metal usage, and optimize costs," he said.

The trend is expected to continue, analysts said, adding that as Powin Energy announces a North American production base, the company will continue to try to minimize costs by building solutions as locally as possible.

Forsyth noted that a competitive advantage for Powin Energy is that the Oregon-based company has its own battery management system (BMS) technology.
