State-owned oil company Qatar Energy has selected Samsung C&T Corp. to build two photovoltaic (PV) solar power plants with a combined capacity of 875 MW in two industrial cities in the Gulf state.
Qatar Energy Renewable Energy Solutions and Samsung C&T signed the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the project at a ceremony in Doha on Tuesday (August 23).
A 417 MW power plant will be built in Mesaied Industrial City and another 458 MW power station will be installed in Ras Laffan Industrial City. The two parks, covering an area of 10 square kilometers, are expected to start producing clean electricity by the end of 2024, using dual safety modules and cleaning robots.
Power from the two solar parks will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from Qatar Energy's facilities in the two industrial cities, including its NFE and NFS LNG projects. It will also increase grid capacity in other regions.
The IC solar project is worth about 2.3 billion Qatari riyals ($631.8 million/€636.5 million). This is the second utility-scale solar project in Qatar, one of the world's largest exporters of natural gas.
The plan will increase the Gulf state's green energy generation capacity to 1,675 GW and support Qatar Energy's goal of 5 GW of solar power by 2035.
