RWE began to build two largest battery energy storage projects in Germany, with a total capacity of 220MW/235MWh

RWE has started to build two battery energy storage system projects in Germany, with a total capacity of 220MW/235MWh.

RWE will invest 140 million euros in these two projects, which will be put into operation at power plants in Neurath and Hamm in North Rhine Westphalia state.

The total capacity of the Neurath project is 80MW/84MWh, with an investment of 50 million euros. The Hamm project has a capacity of 140MW/151MWh, with an investment of 90 million euros.

The project plans to enter the country's balanced market from the second half of 2024 and will participate in the wholesale electricity market.

Like other projects, the new system will be combined with the power plant network of RWE to optimize its joint dispatching to the power grid.

The Neurath and Hamm projects are the two largest battery energy storage systems on the RWE project list. The largest operating system currently is the Werne project launched by RWE at the end of last year, with a total capacity of 72MW, and the Smareg4 project in Thuringia with a total capacity of 67MW.
