Financial Associated Press, February 19. Tesla announced on February 19 that it has produced 1 million 4680 batteries at its pilot plant in California.


4680 battery single cell energy increased by 5 times


The 4680 battery that Tesla will mass-produce is a cylindrical battery with a diameter of 46 mm and a height of 80 mm. The electrodeless ear design and large size increase the battery life by 16%, the power output by 6 times, and the energy by 5 times.


On the one hand, the 4680 battery is innovative in its design and production process. For example, the 4680 battery released by Tesla mainly adopts the following important technologies: 1) It adopts electrodeless ears to establish a new standard for wound batteries; 2) The negative electrode adopts silicon The base negative electrode breaks through the energy density limitation of existing lithium battery materials; 2) The use of dry electrodes sets a new standard for power batteries.


4680 battery will increase the demand for carbon silicon anode, nickel and PVDF materials


The current 4680 battery will use silicon carbon anode material. According to the latest progress of silicon carbon anode in Shi Dashenghua's minutes, the mixing amount of silicon carbon anode (SiOx-C) is expected to increase from 10% to 15%. A 1GWh 4680 battery consumes about 750 tons of silicon carbon anode material. Haitong International estimates that the demand for silicon carbon anode materials in 2022 will be about 56,000 tons, and the demand in 2030 will be about 2.37 million tons.


The positive electrode of the 4680 battery will maximize the use of nickel. According to Haitong International's calculations, according to the current NCM811 ternary high nickel system, a 1GWh 4680 battery consumes about 3,086 tons of nickel sulfate, 413 tons of cobalt sulfate, 248 tons of manganese sulfate, and 619 tons of lithium LCE. The demand is about 231,000 tons, and the demand in 2030 is about 9.752 million tons.


Both the positive and negative electrodes of the 4680 battery will be coated with PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride resin) on the separator. According to the National Energy Information Platform, the PVDF consumption of 1GWh of ternary batteries containing 2% PVDF is about 20 tons. Haitong International estimates that the PVDF consumption of 1GWh of 4680 batteries containing 8% PVDF will increase to about 80 tons.


4680 batteries have higher requirements for lithium battery equipment. The research report of Yu Nengfei of West China Securities pointed out that the 4680 battery adopts electrodeless ear technology, which greatly reduces the internal resistance of the battery and greatly improves the energy density of the battery. On the other hand, the 4680 battery has further improved the production process requirements, and the new technology adopted (such as electrodeless ears) has further improved the equipment requirements. Equipment companies with technical reserves are expected to gain a first-mover advantage and are expected to obtain a high share of orders.

In terms of materials, Fangyuan Co., Ltd. and Zhongwei Co., Ltd. are mainly engaged in cathode material precursors, both of which have entered the Tesla supply chain; China Baoan, Tiannai Technology, and Tianci Materials have already deployed 4680 battery materials.
