Tesla's new 2170 battery will be built in partnership with panasonic at its Gigafactory in Nevada, tesla CEO ElonMusk said on a conference call.
"The new battery will have the best energy density and the lowest cost," Musk said. The new batteries are expected to go into production before the end of the year, according to the report. That's a bold statement.
Tesla did not announce details of the new battery. The 18650 battery pack used in tesla's current electric car is known to have an energy density of about 250Wh/kg, and the ModelS battery pack costs less than $190 / KWH.
Tesla and Panasonic agreed on "construction targets" for the Gigafactory, which aims to cut the cost of long-range battery packs while producing batteries for electric cars that it plans to sell in large quantities. Panasonic invested in equipment, machinery and other production tools at the Gigafactory, which makes cylindrical lithium-ion batteries for Tesla cars.
