Recently, the Argonne National Laboratory of the US Department of Energy has successfully developed and tested a new lithium-sulfur battery.
The researchers said that the battery prototype developed by the company has 700 charge-discharge cycles, and the energy density has the chance to reach 2600Wh/kg. The energy density of this battery is about 10 times that of the current 4680 battery. Lithium-sulfur battery uses lithium metal as the negative electrode, and is considered as the next generation of secondary battery system with great potential due to its ultra-high theoretical energy density. Generally, the capacity of lithium-sulfur battery is 2 to 5 times that of ordinary lithium-ion battery.
In August 2022, it was reported that LG New Energy disclosed a lithium-sulfur battery related patent in the United States, which was first applied in South Korea in 2020 and entered the United States in 2021.
According to the statistics and prediction of research institutions, the global lithium sulfur battery market sales reached US $40 million in 2021, and is expected to reach US $290 million in 2028, with a compound annual growth rate of 35.0%.
