The Aliso Canyon energy crisis was caused by a serious natural gas storage well leak in Aliso Canyon, a suburb of Los Angeles, California, in October 2015. And this battery-gas turbine hybrid power generation system integrates a 10 MW lithium-ion battery energy storage system from Current (a new energy company established by GE), an existing LM6000 aeroderivative gas turbine, and a GE Power Service Company An upgraded version of the control system supplied. The system allows the gas turbine to operate in standby mode without using fuel, and can immediately respond to changing power dispatch requirements.




When peak shaving is not required, the gas turbine changes from minimum load to spinning reserve, and this power is supplied by the battery. When peak load is to be adjusted, the advanced control system can immediately switch the gas turbine from spinning reserve to minimum load, so that power can be delivered to the grid immediately. Therefore, this battery-gas turbine hybrid power generation system will save fuel, reduce maintenance costs, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, allowing SCE to reduce emissions by 60% each year, while saving 2 million gallons of water.
