How long does your cell phone battery last?
Ukrainian scientist VladislavKiselev claims to have developed a battery that can power electronics such as smartphones and even cars for up to 12 years without any recharging during that time.
Kiselev is a senior researcher at the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry and Petrochemistry in Kiev and a professor at the Ukrainian National Academy of Sciences. He unveiled his intriguing battery prototype in 2016 during the Sikorsky Challenge, a prestigious international competition for research projects.
While the matchbox device looks rather unremarkable, the Ukrainian scientist claims it has been powering electronics for a year and four months without a single charge during that time, and will continue to do so for the next 11 years. Because his "battery" can produce volume, not just store energy.
Battery manufacturers and researchers around the world are working on a true battery breakthrough. How can Kiselev claim that his battery will last for 12 years? The senior researcher explained that he took advantage of tritium's key property, its ability to emit electrons.
He adds that an American company called Urban LABS is also using radioactive isotopes of hydrogen. But instead of covering the solar cells with tritium, he used it to strengthen the electrochemical cells, making them 1,000 times stronger. So while the tritium cells in the city lab can power devices like medical implants or various sensors at low power consumption, the Kiselev version could be used to power large electronic devices and even cars.
The scientist added that electrochemical cells similar to his had been available in Ukraine since the 1930s, but no one had been able to use them to generate electricity. To achieve this, he and his team modified its design.
Interestingly, Kiselev also mentioned that after failing to secure funding for the project, he and his colleagues decided to fund the research themselves. Now, after their demonstration at the Sikorsky Challenge, he has been approached by Turkish and Chinese businessmen about tritium batteries for mobile phones.
In referring to the radioactivity of tritium, VladislavKiselev highlights the fact that some radioactive substances are harmless to humans, and tritium is one of them. In fact, tritium is often used as a radioactive light source in watches.
Kiselev sees tritium as the future of energy and claims that 11 of the world's most advanced countries are planning to build an international fusion reactor - also based on tritium as a source of production. However, he added that such reactors cost tens of billions of dollars to build, while his tritium cells are more economical and can last up to 12 years.
