The United Nations has launched an Action Plan for the Advancement of Energy Commitments to 2025 to boost the use of renewable energy and achieve an additional 500 million people with access to electricity and 1 billion more people with clean cooking solutions by 2025.
The Action Plan’s goals also include a 100 percent increase in global renewable energy generation capacity by 2025, an additional 30 million jobs in renewable energy and energy efficiency, and a significant increase in annual global investment in clean energy.
The Energy Pact Action Network, launched simultaneously on the same day, aims to connect those governments seeking to achieve their clean energy goals with those governments and businesses that have pledged to provide funding. The network will be supported by UN-Energy.
UN-Energy brings together nearly 200 governments, businesses and other civil society partners who have made voluntary commitments to the Energy Compact to channel investment, expertise and resources to help deliver on those commitments. The mechanism works with countries around the world and provides implementation programmes and services, and is an important partner for all stakeholders to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals - "Ensure access to affordable, reliable and sustainable modern energy for all".
UN-Energy members include the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the International Atomic Energy Agency, the United Nations Development Programme, the United Nations Environment Programme, the United Nations Children's Fund, the United Nations Women's Programme, the World Food Programme, the World Health Organization, the World Bank and other organizations.
