Voltaria, which is listed in Paris, announced the opening and operation of the Sable Blanc solar+energy storage project in Guyana, which includes a 5MW solar power generation facility and a 5MW/10.6MWh battery energy storage system. The project was put into commercial operation 18 months after its construction began.
The Sable Blanc solar+energy storage project is an expansion project of the existing renewable energy comprehensive project Toco, which is combined with the existing battery energy storage system to achieve a total energy storage capacity of 27MWh and a total installed capacity of 19MW. The opening time of this project was later than expected by Voltalia, with the initial goal of opening and operating by the end of 2022.
According to a 20-year agreement, the battery energy storage system can supply the stored power at night and will replace the diesel generator. The existing battery energy storage system of the Toco project mainly provides frequency regulation and arbitrage services.
This project is one of the few large-scale grid connected battery energy storage projects in South America except for Chile. Chile passed a new law at the end of last year to encourage the deployment of energy storage systems and the adoption of electric vehicles, both markets that will flourish in the future.
