A new magnesium-based dual-ion battery that uses conventional negative electrode materials in the positive electrode

The large-scale application of lithium batteries has also increased the demand for materials, but the limited reserves of lithium ore make it difficult to meet the large-scale layout of the future. So scientists have turned to other low-cost materials.

Recently, the Chinese Academy of Sciences Shenzhen Advanced Institute developed a new magnesium-based double-ion battery. Unlike traditional lithium-ion batteries, graphite is usually used as its negative electrode material on traditional lithium-ion batteries, but magnesium-based dual-ion batteries use graphite material on the positive electrode.

However, magnesium ion battery research is still in its infancy, there is still a distance from commercial use, there are still technical problems to be overcome.

In single-ion batteries such as lithium-ion batteries, the lithium ions in the electrolyte will move between the positive and negative electrodes, just like a rocking chair back and forth. In a dual-ion battery, on the other hand, the cations and anions in the electrolyte move to the negative and positive materials respectively at the same time, and electrochemical redox reactions occur, thus enabling charging and discharging.

It is also found that the magnesium-based dual ion battery has excellent multiplier performance and cycling performance, with a high multiplier charge/discharge capacity retention rate of 85% at 20C and 95.7% after 500 cycles at 5C multiplier. The new magnesium ion battery provides a new idea for the future of lithium batteries, and has a strong prospect for future applications in the field of large-scale energy storage.
